The visible cylinder mechanism shows how a key opens a lock.

HOW DOES IT WORK:

• When you close the lock, the locking bar engages the slot on the short end of the neck, locking the neck in place. Without the key in the lock, the three pins engage the three pin rings, preventing the lock body from turning. When you insert the key, the teeth of the key push the pins outward so that their ends line up with the outer edges of the lock body. This releases the lock body so you can turn it with the key. Turning the lock pulls back the locking bar, releasing the U-shaped neck, which is then pushed up by its springs.
